Artist Biography
ARTIST’S BIO:
Paul Carter Thompson.
“IMAGINE STANDING ON THE SURFACE OF AN ATOM WITH A MAGIFYING GLASS IN YOUR HAND OR FOR THAT MATTER A TELESCOPE”.
(Frederick. W. Clark.)
This statement underpins the ideology that inspires Paul’s’ art. It also provokes his interest in the natural sciences.
Paul knew he wanted to be an artist when he was twelve years old. It was then that he was introduced to the professional world of art by his friend and mentor, Felix Aprahamian. In 1977, Felix introduced Paul to Frederick W. Clark, the brother of Arthur C. Clarke. Paul asked Frederick how Arthur got his inspiration. This is when Frederick uttered the statement, “Imagine standing on the surface of an atom with a magnifying glass in your hand, or for that matter, a telescope.”
Paul was born in 1958 in Ipswich. He spent his early years growing up in Hackney, North London, and went to school in Shoreditch. When he was fourteen years old, he moved to Thamesmead in South London. While living in Thamesmead, he was a member of the Thamesmead art club. It was here that he discovered what paints can do.
When he was four years old, he had a serious accident, which left him with a brain injury. This left him with a weakness on his right side and dystonia. However, this never stopped him from accepting a challenge. Although he walks with a limp and at times finds it difficult, he enjoys walking and getting close to nature. When he was younger, he studied martial arts to make himself stronger.
When he was fourteen, he got his first camera. This introduced him to the power of photography and the use of optics and other visual aids that enabled him to search out images that lay beyond the range of human vision.
He has two main interests in life: natural science and the arts. Natural science informs his art.
In the late 1970s until 1989, he owned and ran a small lithographic printing business in South London, first for an employer and later for himself. He did this for twelve years.
When he was thirty-one, he moved to County Durham. Having spent many years in the graphics industry but having no qualifications, he decided to enroll in a graphic arts course at a local college. Here he discovered digital media. He developed his skills in Photoshop, which he has been using for more than thirty years. After this, he signed up for an HND in photography and later graduated with a BA (Hons) in fine arts.
These days, he is a multi-disciplinary artist, often using many different mediums to create images. At times, he integrates photography, digital techniques, paints, collage, and painting with lights.
